A Memoir with a Southern Spin

Pizzle-s in Paradise
by John Hicks

Revie-wed by Shirley White

How often has the catch phrase ‘ one day I will write a book’ been banded around? Pizzles in Paradise, a Vet’s Memoirs, written by Otautau vet John Hicks, is an excellent example of that phrase becoming reality.

Jo-hn Hicks has put together an amusing collection of anecdotes of his experiences in dealing with animals and their owners during his 30 years of veterinary practice in England, Scotland, Norway and New Zealand. Having to work hard for his qualification has added depth to Hicks’ book that holds appeal for all age groups.

His grasp of the English language, his personal ethics, his own down-to-Earth attitude, his great sense of humour, sharp wit and personal struggle with cancer all add up to a character-buil-ding journey that has been humorously documented. His autobiography takes its readers through his formative years growing up in Britain, English public school education and tertiary training at Liverpool University Faculty of Veterinary Science.

Th-e book delves into his working in all areas of vet practices available, marriage and the birth of his two daughters keeping the readers enthralled.

-
Vets are held in high regard in rural communities and they are expected to have a wide general knowledge.

-As a result he has found himself enormously questioned on a wide range of topics over the years.

He recalls some of his embarrassing moments when confronted by children who had spent all their lives dealing with the daily realities of a no-nonsense, rural upbringing, hilariously satisfying their innocent curiosities as truthfully as he could.

The book has been broken into 38 chapters, each telling a complete tale, yet they are cleverly connected, making it highly amusing, entertaining, ideal holiday reading.

Th-is is a book that is hard to put down, and a must read.
