Whereas James Herriot painted life as a vet (even its more difficult moments) with a romantic paintbrush, John Hicks, in Pizzles in Paradise presents a far more realistic, yet somehow just as attractive, view of the profession. With each 'vet story' the experienced vet will nod his/her head, smile and say -'Oh I am so glad that I'm not the only one that has happened to'
But Pizzles is much more than just one veterinary story after another. It is a near poignant memoir of one vet's journet through life with all it's ups and downs- written with a philosophical insight. John Hicks entertains and informs the reader in a charming, pragmatic and satisfying style. There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments too.
This book should be made compulsory reading for all New Zealand veterinary students, and I highly recommend it to all other vets too and 'wouldn't it be loverly' if a number of our clients read it too. Enjoy!
