Extract from The Marlborough Express, reviewed by Robin Carr, 14 June 2005
“This is a robust history of the role of surveyors in the development of towns and communications in early European New Zealand… These men were truly pioneers of that remote and inaccessible area. They were a diverse group from English public schools, from farming stock and from Continental Europe; anyone could be a surveyor. What the notable ones had in common was an incredible tenacity and instinct for survival.
A-lmost without exception, at one time or another they endured near starvations, escape from drowning, brushes with frostbite and avalanches, “a daily martyrdom” of sand flies and mosquitoes, as well as the inevitable soaking rains of the West Coast and the divide. The author vividly describes them all… These men were truly pioneers of that remote and inaccessible area. They were a diverse group from English public schools, from farming stock and from Continental Europe; anyone could be a surveyor. What the notable ones had in common was an incredible tenacity and instinct for survival.&-quot;
